Phoenix is a mythological bird, which rises anew from its own ashes after death, a symbol of everlasting revival. We, the Phoenix staff, strive constantly to revive our environment and conserve the unique natural heritage of the Russian Far East.
Phoenix Fund was founded by Russian and U.S. conservationists and registered in Vladivostok as a Russian non-profit, non-governmental organization in March 1998. Our mission is to conserve the exceptionally rich fauna and flora of the Russian Far East, the only region where Amur tigers and leopards survive in the wild. These magnificent animals are threatened by habitat deterioration, poaching of the big cats themselves and depletion of their prey populations.
Phoenix is a member of the Amur leopard and Tiger Alliance (ALTA). ALTA is a unique alliance of Russian and western conservation organizations aiming to secure a future for wild Amur leopards and tigers in the Russian Far East and Northeast China. ALTA members include: 21Century Tiger, AMUR, the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation (DSWF), Helsinki Zoo, International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), Moscow Zoo, Tigris Foundation, Phoenix, Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), Tigris Foundation, Wildlife Vets International (WVI), the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) and Wildlife Alliance, Minnesota Zoo.
Phoenix is also a member of the International Tiger Coalition, an unprecedented alliance, made up of environmental, zoo and animal protection organizations. The coalition has come together to speak with one voice in calling for an end to the trade of tiger parts and products through increased intelligence-led law enforcement and strengthening existing tiger-trade bans. Furthermore, the coalition joins leaders of the international traditional Chinese medicine industry. The aim of the coalition is to coordinate research, communications and awareness-raising efforts in order to conserve wild tigers.
In 2009 Phoenix Fund became a member of Russian Advisers Board of GLOBAL GREENGRANTS FUND.
